How Much Does Claude AI Cost? Plans and Pricing in 2026

How much does Claude AI cost? It is free to start. Pro costs $20 a month, or $200 a year. Max costs $100 or $200 a month. Team costs $20 to $125 per seat. Enterprise is $20 per seat plus usage. The API is billed by the token, from $0.10 to $50 per million.
That is the short version. The long version has a few surprises in it, and I will walk you through each one.
A friend asked me a simple question last week. "Is Claude Pro the same price as ChatGPT Plus?"
I knew the rough answer but not the exact one. So I sat down with Anthropic's own pricing pages, wrote down every number, and checked what each plan really gives you. This is what I found.
How Much Does Claude AI Cost in 2026?
Here is all of Claude pricing for 2026 in one table. I kept the prices in US dollars, since that is how Anthropic lists them.
Plan | Price | Who It Is For |
|---|---|---|
Free | $0 | Trying Claude, light daily use |
Pro | $20/month, or $200/year ($17/month) | Individuals who use Claude daily |
Max 5x | $100/month | Heavy individual users |
Max 20x | $200/month | Power users who live inside Claude |
Team Standard | $25/seat monthly, $20/seat annually | Small teams, 2 seats minimum |
Team Premium | $125/seat monthly, $100/seat annually | Power users inside a team |
Enterprise | $20/seat/month annually, plus usage at API rates | 20 seats minimum |
Claude API | Pay per token | Developers building their own apps |
So the Claude subscription cost runs from $0 to $200 for one person. For a company, it depends on seats and usage.
Two small notes from me. Mobile app prices can be a little different, because Apple and Google set their own store pricing. And taxes and fees are added at checkout in many countries, so your final bill may sit slightly above these numbers.
Is Claude AI Free?
Yes. I was surprised how much it covers. You sign up at claude.ai with an email address, and there is no card and no trial clock.
The Claude Free plan gives you chat on web, desktop, and mobile. You also get web search, file creation, memory, and Artifacts. For a free tool, that is a lot.
Claude AI Free Plan Limits
Here is where Claude AI free vs paid really splits. Every plan has usage limits, but Free has the tightest ones. Your usage runs on a rolling five-hour window. Anthropic does not publish fixed message limits, because longer chats and bigger files use up more of your allowance.
Free also leaves out Opus, Claude's most advanced model for long tasks. And you can only keep 5 Projects at a time.
So can you use Claude without paying? Yes, for as long as you like. I just would not try to run a full workday on it.
Claude AI Pricing Plans Explained
Now let me go plan by plan and show you what each subscription fee buys.
Claude's five plans side by side for 2026, from Free to Enterprise.
Claude Free Plan
I covered this one above. It costs nothing and resets every five hours. I think of it as the test drive.
Claude Pro Pricing
The Claude Pro plan is $20 a month in the US. Other regions pay in local currency, so the Claude Pro cost per month can look a little different where you live.
So what is included in Claude Pro? Here is the list I care about:
At least five times Free's usage per session
Opus and the other advanced models
Unlimited Projects
Priority access when Claude is busy
Claude Code, for coding work in your terminal
Usage credits, so you can keep going after you hit a limit
One thing Pro does not include is the API. If you want to build an app on Claude, that is separate developer billing.
Claude Max Pricing
The Claude Max plan is all about usage capacity. It comes in two sizes. Max 5x costs $100 a month and gives you five times Pro's usage. Max 20x costs $200 a month and gives you twenty times Pro's usage.
Both include everything in Pro. Both also come with monthly API credits: $100 a month on Max 5x and $200 a month on Max 20x.
Max is billed monthly only. There is no annual subscription for it right now.
Claude Pro vs Max Pricing: The Math I Did
This is the part I found most useful, so I want to show you the numbers.
If you treat Pro's usage as one unit, here is what each unit costs you:
Plan | Price | Usage vs Pro | Cost per unit of Pro usage |
|---|---|---|---|
Pro | $20 | 1x | $20 |
Max 5x | $100 | 5x | $20 |
Max 20x | $200 | 20x | $10 |
So Max 5x is not a discount. You pay the same rate as Pro, just more of it. Max 20x is where the price per unit drops in half.
And that is before the API credits. If you would spend that money on the API anyway, Max 20x gets even better value for money.
My rule: if Pro runs out on you a few times a week, Max 5x fixes it. If you are in Claude all day, skip straight to Max 20x.
Claude Team Pricing
The Claude Team plan is built for team collaboration, with a minimum of two seats. It uses per-seat pricing, so you pay for each person.
Standard seats: $25 per person per month billed monthly, or $20 billed annually. Each one gets 1.25 times Pro's usage.
Premium seats: $125 per person per month billed monthly, or $100 billed annually. Each one gets five times a Standard seat.
You can mix seat types on one account. We would give Premium seats only to the two or three people who use Claude hardest, and Standard to everyone else.
Team also adds business features: admin tools, central billing, SSO, spend controls, and connectors for Google Drive, Gmail, Slack, and GitHub. You also get up to $500 a month in pooled API credits. Team stops at 150 seats.
Claude Enterprise Pricing
The Claude Enterprise plan costs $20 per seat per month, billed annually, with a 20-seat minimum.
Here is the catch I want you to see. That seat fee only covers access. Everything your team does in Claude, Claude Code, and Cowork is billed on top, at standard API rates.
So Enterprise is really usage-based pricing with a seat fee in front. Twenty seats cost $400 a month before anyone sends a single message.
In return, you get everything in Team plus audit logs, SCIM, custom data retention, a Compliance API, and US-only inference. If you want invoicing through Anthropic's sales team, the minimum is 50 seats.
How Much Does Claude AI Cost Per Month and Per Year?
If you are choosing between a monthly subscription and an annual subscription, this is how the billing cycle changes the Claude AI annual pricing:
Plan | Paid Monthly (per year) | Paid Annually (per year) | You Save |
|---|---|---|---|
Pro | $240 | $200 | $40 |
Max 5x | $1,200 | Not offered | $0 |
Max 20x | $2,400 | Not offered | $0 |
Team Standard (per seat) | $300 | $240 | $60 |
Team Premium (per seat) | $1,500 | $1,200 | $300 |
So how much does Claude AI cost per year? For one person on Pro, $200 if you pay up front.
My advice is simple. If you switch AI tools often, keep the Claude AI monthly subscription so you can leave anytime. If you already know Claude is staying, pay yearly and keep the savings.
What Claude Team seats cost monthly versus annually.
Claude API Pricing Explained
This is where I see the most confusion, so I will go slowly.
Claude plans and the Claude API are two separate things. Your Pro subscription does not give you API access. The API uses pay-as-you-go pricing through the Claude Console, and you pay for token consumption.
Tokens are small chunks of text. You pay for input tokens (what you send) and output tokens (what Claude writes back).
So how much does Claude API cost? Here is the Claude API pricing per million tokens, taken from Anthropic's official pricing page:
Model | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
Claude Haiku 5.5 | $0.10 (prompts up to 100K tokens) | $0.50 |
Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 |
Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 | $20 |
Claude Fable 5.1 | $10 | $50 |
Claude API cost per million tokens, by model.
A million tokens is roughly 750,000 words, so the cost per million tokens goes a long way. Let me give you a real example.
Say we answer 1,000 customer emails with Sonnet 5.5. Each one sends about 1,000 input tokens and gets back 300 output tokens. That is 1 million input tokens ($2) and 300,000 output tokens ($3). Total: $5 for 1,000 replies.
A few more things that change your API usage charges:
Extended thinking tokens are billed as output tokens, so long reasoning costs more.
Prompt caching lets you reuse the same long context at a small slice of the input price.
The Batch API takes 50 percent off when you do not need answers right away.
Max and Team plans come with API credits, which can cover light developer work.
Claude AI Pricing Compared to ChatGPT and Gemini
Since my friend's question started all this, here is the full plan comparison. AI chatbot pricing has settled into the same price points across all three companies.
Tier | Claude | ChatGPT | Google Gemini |
|---|---|---|---|
Free | $0 | $0 | $0 |
Main paid plan | Pro, $20 | ChatGPT Plus, $20 | AI Pro, $19.99 |
Power user | Max, $100 or $200 | Pro, $100, $200 or $500 | AI Ultra, $99.99 or $199.99 |
Team seat | $20 to $25 | $20 to $25 | Sold through Workspace |
On Claude vs ChatGPT, the main plans cost exactly the same. On Claude vs Gemini, Google is one cent cheaper. Google AI Pro is the plan that replaced Gemini Advanced, if you still know it by that name.
The top end is where AI subscription costs spread out. ChatGPT pricing now reaches $500 a month, and neither Claude nor Google goes that high.
One thing I noticed: Claude Max includes $100 to $200 a month in API credits. I did not find that in the other two power-user plans.
Is Claude Pro Worth the Cost?
I think it comes down to one question: how often do you hit the Free plan's wall?
If you chat with Claude a few times a week, Free is enough. I would keep my $20.
If you use it every day for writing, research, or code, Pro is worth the money. You stop counting messages, you get Opus, and you get Claude Code.
My test is simple. The second week you get blocked by a limit more than once, upgrade.
Matching a Claude Plan to How You Work
With all the Claude pricing plans compared, here is how I would pick, based on the kind of user you are:
You chat now and then: stay on Free.
You use Claude daily for work: Pro at $20.
Pro keeps running out: Max 5x at $100.
You are in Claude all day: Max 20x at $200, the cheapest per unit of usage.
You are a small team of 2 to 150 people: Team, with Premium seats only for your heaviest users.
You are a company of 20 or more with compliance needs: Enterprise, but budget for usage on top of seats.
You are building a product: skip the subscription and use the API.
For Claude AI subscription plans for businesses, I would start on Team and only move to Enterprise once compliance tools become a must.
If you are paying for more than one AI tool, it helps to see how others price their tiers. I did the same breakdown for what Perplexity costs, and the two pair well.
