The Date the Answer Changed

On 6 August 2026 OpenAI announced it was removing text chat limits for Free and Go users, rolling out from the week of 10 August. GPT-5.6 Luna became the default model for both tiers, replacing GPT-5.5, and both got a new Think button for harder questions.

By mid August it had shipped. OpenAI's own Free Tier FAQ now describes free users as having unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards.

The context is worth noting. ChatGPT had recently passed one billion weekly users. Removing the message cap on a free tier at that scale is not a small decision, and it reads as a response to competitive pressure rather than generosity.

Here is the practical consequence. The old reason to pay was running out of messages. That reason no longer exists.

Wall 1: Text Messages. This One Is Gone

You can now chat as much as you like on the free plan.

The Think button, which applies more reasoning to a harder question, does not draw down a separate allowance either, provided you are not also asking it to process files or use tools at the same time.

For plain questions, drafting, explaining, summarising pasted text and general back and forth, the free plan is now genuinely unrestricted.

That covers what most people actually use ChatGPT for.

The Four Walls That Remain

Everything that is not plain text still has its own ceiling, and they are separate from each other. One can run out while the rest keep working.

Images. Generating pictures is capped at a small number per day. Reported figures vary and OpenAI does not publish an exact number. This is the wall most people hit first, because image generation is fun and the allowance is small.

The Ad Wall, If You Are in the United States

But you can see your own position. Open Settings, then the Usage section, and it shows what remains of your allowances.

Check that before you conclude you need to upgrade. A lot of people pay 20 dollars a month because they hit an image cap once and assumed the whole account was throttled.

What Plus Actually Buys You Now

The mental model most guides still use is wrong, and it is worth stating plainly.

Plus at 20 dollars a month no longer buys you the right to send more messages. Text is unlimited on free.

What it buys is higher ceilings on the metered things, plus the flagship model and the locked features. Better images, more file uploads, Deep Research, Agent Mode, Canvas, Advanced Voice, no ads, and GPT-5.6 Sol answering instead of Luna.

Go at 8 dollars sits awkwardly now. It runs the same Luna model as free and got the same unlimited text change, so its pitch narrowed to roomier caps on uploads, images and memory. It still shows ads.

Above that, Pro splits into 100 dollars for five times Plus usage and 200 dollars for twenty times, with Sol Pro reasoning. Business seats run roughly 20 to 25 dollars each with a two-seat minimum.

Is ChatGPT Free for Students?

Not any more, and this trips people up because the search results are stale.

OpenAI ran a promotion in spring 2025 giving free ChatGPT Plus to college students in the US and Canada, verified through a third-party student check. That offer ended in May 2025.

As of August 2026 there is no standing student discount on the consumer plans. Students use the same free tier as everyone else, which, given the August changes, is a much better deal than it was when the promotion ran.

Which Wall Will You Hit First

Work through it honestly.

If you mostly type questions and read answers, you will hit no wall at all. Stay free.

If you generate images regularly, you will hit that wall within a day. It is the fastest ceiling on the plan.

If you upload documents daily, you will hit the file cap. This is the most common genuine upgrade trigger for professional use.

If you find the answers not quite good enough rather than not plentiful enough, you have hit the model wall, and only a paid plan moves it.

And if you are evaluating this for a team rather than yourself, the free-versus-paid question is usually the wrong one. Sources disagree on whether Deep Research is available on the free tier at all.

Some guides list it among free features, sometimes described as limited. Others list it as strictly paid. OpenAI's public materials do not resolve it cleanly, and since the company does not publish exact caps, I could not verify which is correct.

My reading is that a lightweight version may be available with a small allowance while the full capability is paid, but I would not budget on it. Check the Usage section in your own account, which is the only authoritative answer for your specific case.
